What Is Changing
An AI assistant may prepare work for review. An agent with connected tools may place orders, change records or pass tasks to other systems within its configured permissions. The governance event is the increase in allowed action, not simply a deployment milestone.
For example, management proposes allowing a purchasing agent to issue routine orders. An authorized business decision should define spending ceilings, approved suppliers, exclusions, human checkpoints and who may revoke access. Routine permissions belong with authorized management; material or board-reserved changes follow the relevant approval route.
Why It Matters
Test those limits in the systems that execute transactions. Can a service account exceed the ceiling or reach an excluded supplier? Where enforcement is insufficient, retain human approval or withhold expanded access. Keep a dated record of previous and new permissions, approval and test results.
The 6xD Reading
The 6xD Accountability Gap research links decision authority, investment sponsorship and business outcome ownership in one evidence record. A consequential agent permission change should update that record with the approving authority, limits, economic sponsor, business owner and next review.
Through the 6xD D2 Digital Cognitive Organization lens, access configuration and business authorization are different responsibilities. Technology teams implement access; authorized business executives approve consequential uses, while named outcome owners report results. The board challenges material exposure and decides reserved matters.
Monitor actions against the approved scope. Assign an owner to investigate exceptions, suspend execution and correct the process. Logs help explain what an agent did, but not whether the enterprise authorized it.
Leadership Takeaway
Before granting a consequential permission, request its dated approval record: what changed, who approved it, how limits were tested and who can intervene. If granted access exceeds the approval, restrict it until the mismatch is resolved.
Recheck authority when permissions expand, connected tools change or an agent can pass execution to another system. Management should not treat these as routine software updates when they change enterprise exposure.
Executive test: Can management show who authorized the last material agent permission change and prove that the boundary works?
